Spotify says they are ready to IPO. With $5 billion in revenue and 71 million paying users, the numbers definitely say they are. But potential investors need to look not just at the money the company is making but also at the money it is leaving being left on the table.
In this edition of Pricing Page Teardown, Patrick and Peter show that while Spotify's pricing might seem spot on, that single number is hiding a bigger issue. Concentrating on acquiring customers in the crowded streaming music market has meant that Spotify is missing out on monetization opportunities. While this might not matter now, if they want to sustain their growth, monetization matters.

Full disclosure, we’ve loved using the freemium model for ProfitWell - free subscription financial metrics for SaaS and subscription businesses, so we may be a bit biased, but we also study a lot of free models through our work at Price Intelligently.
DropBox is the biggest winner of all time in the freemium space. They did a phenomenal job leveraging virality and optimizing their unit economics to realize massive growth.
Unfortunately, we’re not all Dropbox.
We won’t all raise a ton of money -- some of us just don’t want to be a company of that size.
We’ve done an exhaustive study of 5000 SaaS companies at Price Intelligently, capturing our findings in this free 140 page book on pricing strategy. We’ve seen many companies throw freemium products into the market believing that the freemium model will deliver immediate profits.
Most companies fail to understand that freemium is an acquisition model, not a revenue model.
Wistia is one company that understood the proper roll of freemium and achieved success with the model despite resource constraints.
Here’s what we can learn from them:
Know Your Customer: Wistia spent over four years building the core of their business and gaining a understanding of their best customers’ behaviors and motivations before launching a freemium plan.
Focus on Conversion: When Wistia launched that free plan, they had sales and product marketing fully focused on the conversion between free and paid.
Wistia’s sales teams took advantage of the huge lead list generated by freemium while their marketing team educated customers on the benefits of paid plans.
If you're a hardcore B2B business that's already large, quickly growing, or even just starting out, Wistia is a great company to emulate.
